The Sun and its Family

The sun as we see it is a huge ball of very hot gas measuring about 1,380,000 kilometers in diameter. Dark spot can often be seen on the sun,s surface, these are known as sun spots and they come and go frequently. These spot stand out as dark patches since they are cooler as compared to the hot area by which they are surrounded. Huge flames called prominences are constantly shot out from the surface of the Sun.

The Sun has its own grvitational field which is strong enough to keep the nine planets in its family revolving around it. The Sun’s family comprises of in order of revolution Murcury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Seturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. These planets move around the Sun in the same direction in an wlliptical orbit. The planets also rotate on their own axis’ as they revolve around the sun. the Earth is so far the only known planets with any life on it. All planets in the Sun’s family were probably formed the same spinning cloud of material from which the sun was created. This could probably explain the reason why they move in the same direction while rotating on their axis. This movement is necessary if the planets did not move at just the right speed depending upon their distance from the Sun they would be pulled in by the sun’s gravitational field. Mercury, the planet which is closest to the sun has to move the fastest taking only 88 days to complete a revolution in order to prevent being attracted towards the Sun. The Earth takes 365 days and pluto in contrast take about 250 years. If the planets were to move any faster then they would fly off into space. All planets except Uranus and Venus rotate in an anticlockwise direction. The sun’s family of planets and their respective moons is called the Solar Syste’.
