Prophet Muhammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) was sent by ALLAH to the ignorant people. He is the greatest man that ever lived. He led a simple life. He proved that even a poor man could be noble and great in the small acts of life. It is the beauty of character which makes a man great. There are many things that one dislikes. There are some person one hates. It requires tolerance to behave peacefully towards such people. Tolerance means to bear pain or hardships with patience. It also means to bear things you do not like.

For example, when you are very angry and want to hit someone, but do not do so, you are displaying tolerance. The Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) loved humanity. He was tolerant even to those who were against him. The following examples illustrate the tolerance of the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم).

Once a Jew wanted to test the tolerance of the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم). He made a deal for the purchase of dates and paid the money in a advance to the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم). Then he went to the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) much before the due date. He wanted the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) to lose his temper. So he demanded the dates angrily. Hazrat Umer (May Allah be pleased with him) was present at that time. He wanted to kill the jew but the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) checked him. He advised Hazrat Umer (R.A) to be patient. He also asked Hazrat Umer (R.A) to give him some more dates with the already agreed amount. The jew greatly impressed by the tolerance of the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم).

In another instance, there lived an old woman who was a birrer enemy of the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم). She used to throw garbage on the way when the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) passed by. One day when the Holy prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) passed by the woman’s house, there was no garbage. The Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) came to know that she was ill. The Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) went to the old woman and inquired about her health. He fetched water for her, cleaned her house and gave her medicine. The woman was so much impressed by the kindness and tolerance of the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) that she embraced Islam and become a good Muslim.

The people of Makkah boycotted the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) socially of three years. When he (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) went to Taif to preach Islam, the people there threw stones at him. Hazrat Jibrael (A.S.) asked the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) on the occasion of trial and said, “O, Muhammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) speak, if you so wish I will destroy them”. The Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) replied, “O Gracious and Merciful ALLAH, show them the right path, for they do not know what they are doing. They do not recognize me. They do not know I am Muhammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) the Prophet of ALLAH. Make it known to them that I am their great well-wisher”.

His enemies had a lot of wealth and weapons. When they fought with the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم), they were larger in number. The Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) had only a few soldiers and a small quantity of weapons, But he (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) showed great courage and patience, because he (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) had his trust in “ALLAH”. At one time he (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) was left all alone in the battle field, but even then he (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) show courage and patience. He (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) said, “I am the true Prophet of ALLAH”. ALLAH gave him victory.

In his last address, the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) said, “ Revenge for bloodshed, (as was the custom in the days of ignorance before Islam) is forbidden. I forgive those who murdered my cousin, Ibne-Rabiah”. Hazrat Ans bin Malik (may ALLAH be pleased with him) said, “ I served the Prophet of ALLAH 10years. By ALLAH, he (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) never objected to any thing I said or did”. We, as Muslims should follow the noble example of the tolerance of our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).
