Deserts are formed for various reason, which include rain shadow deserts which are formed because it rains on one side of a mountain and by the time the air reaches the other side, it is dry. The Gobi desert in Asia is an example of this type. Lack moisture in other areas, especially around the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn prevents any vegitation from growing.

The Sahara desert in an example of this type. Lack of vegitation in deserts facilitates soil erosion and eroded rocks become sand which covers the land. Since there is no cloud cover in these areas, heat is absorbed during the day thus making the days extremely hot. At night this heat escapes into the air thus making conditions creates deserts.
