Despite being the second largest country, only one-tenth of it is inhabited. The northern part of this country has a cold terrain with long, dark and frozen winters and very little vegetation. As a result of this most of its population lives close to the south which is warmer. Most of central North America is covered with plains which include belts of fertile land and arid desert. The first inhabitants came to Canada around 25,000 B.C. and the North American Indians inhabited this area till the French and British arrived during the 17th century. In the mid 18th century Britain had control over Canada which continued till the mid 19th century when Canada became independent. Canada is rich in natural resources like oil, coal, natural gas, copper, iron, etc. Its exports comprise of wheat, minerals, timber, machinery, etc. Canada has its capital in Ottawa. Earth’s magnetic North Pole is situated in Canada and magnetic compasses are useless in this area.

Like Canada, most of the North American continent is covered by the United States of America which spans over an area of more than 9 million sq. kms. In the United States there are many natural wonders like the Grand Canyon which was cut by the Colorado river and is as much as 29 km wide and over 6000 feet deep in many places. It was in the year 1620 when about 100 English settlers landed at what is now called Massachusetly. These were the first settlers to arrive in the United States. This area was subsequently colonized by the British and it was in the year 1783 that the colonies won their independence.

The United States comprises of 50 states which are shown in the form of stars on its flag. The United States is the world’s largest exporter of wheat and contributes to more than 50% of the corn production on the Earth. Most of the wheat grown in the Midwest region, i.e. the area between the Rocky mountains and the Mississippi river. Besides wheat the United States are also very large producers of soya beens, nuts and oranges. South of the United States lies Mexico.
