Life on our planet has evolved, developed and continued because all creatures have some system which allows them to reproduce. The system of recreating life is called reproduction. Both male and female human beings have reproductive glands and organs. The male sex organs are located outside the abdomen in the form fo testes and a penis, while the woman’s reproductive organs are the overies which are located inside the abdomen. Women have a large number of egg cells, called ova, in their ovaries. After puberty, one egg cell is released from her ovary every month. If this egg cell is not fertilised then it breaks up and passes out during the menstrual cycle when the linning of the uterus breaks down and passes out of the vagina in the form of blood. Once the lining is thick again a fresh egg cell is released from the ovaries and it awaits fertilizations. Men on the other hand produce cells called sperms in their tests.

    During sexual intercourse the man’s penis becomes hard and he can insert it into the woman’s vagina. Muscular movement in the woman’s vagina helps in squeezing the sperms out of the penise. These sperms flow towards the woman’s vagina in a fluid called semen. In the woman’s body, the sperms then flow through the Uterus towards the Fallopian tubes, where they come in contact with a female egg cell and fertilisation takes place. Within three days of fertilisation the egg flows towards the uterus where the baby begins to develop. 

    The egg cell feeds off the blood enriched walls of the uterus and the baby begins to take shape. Within about 5 weeks the baby has a shape which can be recognised and at this stage it is called an Embryo. The reproductive cycle is completed within about 9 months from the date of fertilisation. Physical characteristics and traits of the parents are passed on to the child through Chromosomes, nucleus of cells which carry the genetic information.
