The Assyrians

    About three thousand years ago most of modern Iraq was inhabited by the Assyrians. These people lived in the highland area around the river Tigers. The Assyrain empire lasted for over three centuries. During the 7th century B.C. this empire was at its peak and stretched across the area between the persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea.

     The Assyrians were great warriors and their armies included a large number of soldiers, horses, chariots, etc. During the reign of their king Shalmanesar-I they conquered a large area including many independent states like Babylon and consolidated it into an empire and later king like Ashurbanipal-II and Sennacherib added to it. The Assyrians had their capital in khosrabad. They were known for their fearlessness, trade links and great wealth. Around 600B.C. their empire grew too big and it became difficult to control it. At this stage they were invaded by the Medes and the Babylonians and the empire collapsed.
